While working for a WISP (wireless internet service provider) i was introduced to the brand Microtik. Not being a ‘consumer’ brand I figured I’d write a bit about it and possible make some posts on how to do things on their system.
What is MicroTik?
MikroTik provides hardware and software for Internet connectivity in most of the countries around the world. The Software they provide is called RouterOS which is installed on their RouterBOARDs or you can license the software and install it on a PC.
What do they offer?
They offer full wireless systems. They sell routers under the ‘RouterBOARD’ brand, switches under the ‘SwitchOS’. They sell all sorts of Accesspoints, for either inside you home or a CPE from what a WISP would use to connect you to their internet.
why I use it?
I kept using MicroTik due to the low cost of their hardware. RouterOS is also very robust and gets constant updates. I find it a great alternative to CISCO products. I also like using their winbox program. You can configure your RouterOS either in the webUI or through winbox.
