This is a basic power supply that uses a transformer that you can plug into any wall and be able to use it as a DC power supply.
What we need the transformer to go through is a bridge rectifier. Basically its four diodes placed in a specific order to get it from AC to DC power. A capacitor is added to clean up the signal.
This is the basic foundation of the power supply converting the power from AC to DC.
Now say we want a output of 9v permanently because you do a lot of projects that require it. The main component we need to add is a Voltage regulator. The voltage regulator will allow us to have a constant output voltage. Their are various regulators for you to choose from if you want a different output voltage, depending on your needs. An LM 7809 will give you 9v output but swapping it for a LM7805 will give you a 5v output.
I added an led just to show which state the power supply is on (led lit = ON).
Now say we want a power supply that can be adjusted from 0-24V because you do a varity of changes. What you’ll want is a regulator that will allow us to have the full 24V ( I picked a LM317) and we’ll want to attach a variable resistor to it. This will allow us to control the output easily .
Now that the main design is done we’ll want to add a Fuse to protect the circuit and an On off switch to control the whole thing. We’ll be adding it to the other side of the transformer .
Now its time to put it all into a project case and add any cosmetics you want to personalize it.
